Comparison

BaZi vs Zi Wei Dou Shu

They are the two best-known Chinese chart systems, they use the same calendar, and they answer different questions. One is a timeline; the other is a floor plan of a life.

Two objects, not two opinions

BaZi is built from four pairs of characters and reads how the five elements in them balance and move. Zi Wei builds a board of twelve palaces and places a fixed set of stars in them. BaZi's output is a set of forces; Zi Wei's output is a map of areas of life with objects standing in them.

BaZi's strength: the clock

Because it is tied to the solar year, BaZi handles sequence well. A decade pillar, an annual pillar and a month pillar stack into a timeline that a reader can point at. If the question is "is this a good year to change jobs", BaZi has a specific, checkable answer structure: which element is being supplied, which is being drained, and what the useful element does under that pressure.

Its weakness is domain specificity. BaZi will tell you a chart is under wealth pressure; it is less precise about whether that pressure shows up as a business partner, a salary cut, or a house.

Zi Wei's strength: the map

Zi Wei has a palace for each area, so it can be specific about where something lands. The Spouse palace, the Career palace and the Wealth palace each carry their own stars and their own reading — which is why Zi Wei is the system people reach for when the question is "what does my marriage look like" rather than "when does it change".

Its weakness is the flip side: because every palace always has something in it, it is easy to read meaning into detail, and the system's density makes it easier to over-interpret. It also punishes a wrong birth hour more severely than BaZi does.

Why their answers diverge

A BaZi chart can show a strong, well-supported Day Master while the Zi Wei board shows a difficult Spouse palace. Both can be right at once: one is describing capacity, the other is describing a domain. When a reader presents them as contradictory, the usual cause is that the two answers were given at different scales and then compared as if they were the same kind of statement.

Which should you use

Use BaZi when the question is about time: this year, this decade, this month. Use Zi Wei when the question is about area: this relationship, this job, this family situation. If you only have one reading in you, BaZi survives a missing birth hour and Zi Wei does not — which alone decides it for a lot of people.

Questions people ask

Are BaZi and Zi Wei Dou Shu the same thing?

No. They share a culture and a calendar, not a method. BaZi converts the birth moment into four stem-and-branch pairs and reads the five elements. Zi Wei lays out twelve palaces on a board and places stars in them according to the lunar calendar, the hour and the year's element class.

Which one needs an exact birth hour?

Zi Wei needs it far more. The whole board is built from the hour, so a wrong hour moves the Life palace and every star with it. In BaZi a missing hour costs you one of four pillars; the chart is still readable, with fewer layers.

Why do the two systems sometimes disagree?

Because they are different models with different resolution. BaZi describes elemental balance and timing in decades; Zi Wei describes domains — this palace is marriage, that one is career. Where they disagree, the disagreement itself is informative: it usually means the question was asked at the wrong scale.
