What is my Chinese zodiac animal?

Twelve animals, one per year. Enter a birth date and this page reads the animal carried by your year pillar — the same branch the chart uses, so the answer matches the rest of this site. It also tells you when the popular rule and the traditional rule disagree.

Reviewed November 2026

The one thing most calculators get wrong. The animal changes at the start of spring (Lichun, around 4 February), not on 1 January and not on Chinese New Year. If you were born in that window, two sites can honestly disagree — this page shows you which rule it used, and where the boundary fell.

How the animal is worked out

The twelve animals are not a calendar of their own — they are nicknames for the twelve earthly branches. A year pillar is one heavenly stem over one branch, so “the year of the Goat” means “the year whose branch is Wei”. Sixty year pillars cycle through ten stems and twelve branches, which is why the animal repeats every twelve years while the element on top of it changes every two.

The branch changes at the moment the sun reaches 315° of longitude: the solar term Lichun, “spring begins”, which falls on 3–5 February. That is earlier than Chinese New Year, sometimes by a fortnight. So a person born on 20 January has the previous year's animal under both rules, and a person born between the two dates has the previous animal under the festival rule and the new one under the solar-term rule. BaZi uses the solar term; this page does too, and says so in the result whenever you land inside that window.

The twelve animals

Years below are the recent ones whose year pillar carries that branch. They run from the start of spring, so someone born in January of the first year listed may still belong to the previous animal.

What the animal does and does not tell you

It is one branch out of four. Your year pillar is the branch everyone shares with roughly a twelfth of the planet; your day pillar — the one the Day Master comes from — is the one a reading actually starts with, and it is different for every day of the sixty-day cycle. Twelve animals cannot describe four billion people, and any page that claims otherwise is selling something.

What the animal is genuinely good for: it is the fastest way to find your year pillar, it is how Chinese speakers refer to years in conversation, and the pairing and clashing animals are real structural relationships in the system rather than personality quizzes. If you want the part that is personal — the day master, the element balance, the ten-year cycles — that is the full chart, and it takes one more field.

Questions people ask

How is my Chinese zodiac animal calculated?

From the branch of your year pillar, which changes at the solar term Lichun — around 4 February — not on 1 January. This page reads that pillar from the same engine the full chart uses, so the animal here and the chart there can never disagree.

Why do other calculators give a different animal?

Because most of them switch animals at Chinese New Year, which falls between 21 January and 20 February and is always later than Lichun. Anyone born in the gap between the two dates gets the new animal here and the previous one there. The result tells you when that applies to you.

Does the animal repeat every twelve years?

The branch does. The element above it changes every two years, which is why 1990 is a Metal Horse and 2002 a Water Horse. Sixty year pillars cycle through ten stems and twelve branches before the sequence repeats exactly.

Is this the same as a BaZi reading?

No. The animal is one of four pillars, and roughly one in twelve people alive shares yours. A reading starts from the day pillar instead, which changes on every day of a sixty-day cycle — that is the part which is actually specific to you.
